About DC Habitat
95 million Americans are affected by housing problems, many of them in urban centers like our nation’s capital.
Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. (DC Habitat) believes that everyone deserves a house they want to call home. That’s why they work to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness in the nation’s capital by building affordable, energy-efficient homes for low-income families in need.
Habitat offers a hand up, not a hand out
DC Habitat sells homes affordably, at below-market prices, to families who are ineligible for conventional financing. In return, these families contribute 300 hours of ‘sweat equity’ towards the construction of their home, participate in educational workshops and commit to regular mortgage payments. It has been shown that access to safe, affordable housing helps families to build wealth, improve the health and education of children and strengthen local communities.
